Founded in Faith. Strengthened in Unity. Serving with Purpose.
The Bluefield Union Mission was established on October 13, 1931, in the midst of the Great Depression. As families across the region struggled to meet even their most basic needs, a group of community leaders, businesses, clubs, and churches joined together in “union” to help their neighbors survive the crisis. Their mission was simple: meet emergent needs when no one else could.
What began with 12 faithful houses of worship has grown into a remarkable network of 174 churches, local businesses, civic groups, law enforcement partners, and volunteers. All working together to serve those facing the unexpected.
Our Purpose
We are not the first place people turn.
We are the place that is still there when every other option has been exhausted.
The Mission exists to meet immediate, emergency needs that prevent further crisis in a person’s life. Through food, shelter, clothing, transportation, and limited medical and prescription assistance, we help stabilize individuals and families so they can regain their footing.

Our Guiding Philosophies
- Giving of yourself (your time, care, and resources) is the highest form of worship.
- Love people. Use things. Never the other way around.
- Serve everyone, even when they are hurting, frustrated, or difficult. All people are made in His image.
- We are imperfect people helping imperfect people. Grace leads everything we do.
And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus. – Philippians 4:19
Still United. Still Serving. Still Standing in the Gap.
From the Great Depression to today, the Mission has remained a steadfast presence in moments of crisis. Our work is a testament to what can happen when a community comes together in faith, compassion, and unity of purpose.
A Safety Net Fueled by Faith
For 94 years, the Mission has operated with a simple belief: “God will provide.”
We do not actively solicit donations, nor do we rely on large fundraising campaigns. Instead, we trust God to move through His people and He has supplied every need for nearly a century.
If He’s leading you to serve, we invite you to answer that calling.
